Verne doesn't add the journey up. This map does: following the stops he names, Brindisi, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Allahabad, Calcutta, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yokohama, San Francisco, Omaha, New York, Queenstown and Liverpool, the route comes to about 39,000 km.

That is almost as far as round the equator, even though Fogg goes round much further north, roughly at the latitude of Bombay, Hong Kong and New York. The dips south to India and Singapore and the long sea legs make up the difference.

The longest single leg is the Pacific: about 8,400 km on the General Grant, from Yokohama to San Francisco. Between stops the map takes the short way round, so treat 39,000 km as a sketch, not a measured track.
